IN former editions of this work the Autobiography was followed by Letters from Switzerland and Italy. But a translation of Goethe's Annals, as he called his con densed journal, having been accomplished by Mr. Charles Nisbet, it was thought best to append this to the more important autobiographic work, and to transfer the letters to other volumes. Those from Switzerland are now printed with the Campaign in France, Siege of Mainz, and the rhine-tour, whilst the Italian letters have been supplemented by the second part of the Tour in Italy, making therewith one complete volume, thus carrying out the original intention, though in a somewhat different manner, announced in the former edition of this volume.
