There's something to be said about good prequels. And it's surprising how hard they are to find when they are novella length. I usually don't do Novellas but since this was a prequel, i expect the rest of the series to be full sized. Not sure I'll be reading them, however. The story was surprisingly good at first, despite its length and the unfortunate first-person POV. While the Main characters reconciled very quickly, I understood that as a Novella, things have to move a bit more quickly. The plot was great and I feel this book would have been so much better if it had been a full novel. There were many moments that deserved the proper time and care that only longer novels can achieve. they were rushed or glossed over to fit the constraints of a novella..But then it all came to a halt. The characters started to flatten and sound the same. This is a big issue that authors that do First-Person POV tend to have. All the character's inner voices sound the same. I struggled with remembering whose POV I was in. .At the 80% mark the book spoils the ending. then the rest of the book is spent explaining what happened in the past. ...which was a choice, I suppose. The story came to a complete stop while we back track to find out how the story ended (since we were already told the climax of the story) A moment in the book that had been built up from almost from the start, the tension was thick....and then, it was gone. poof. "Oh yeah, that thing we were worried about is no longer a worry, this is how I did it" So there is no tension or satisfaction in watching the ending play out...we already know the ending. Then we get an epilogue...and then weirdly, a second epilogue from the ten-year-old's POV (which, By the way, sounds the same as the other two adults, sheesh. What ten year old uses that kind of vocabulary in her inner thoughts? ) Three stars for a strong, interesting plot regardless of the fumbled ending.
wow wow wow. this book was so good!!! for being shorter, i didn’t expect it to be so plot heavy but i loved it????? like they have my heart forever!!!! serena was so adorable 😭 i also cried multiple times!!! brooke montgomery has become an autobuy author for me!!!
