Description

In "Crush," Richard Siken invites readers into a realm of emotion and raw vulnerability, crafting verses that resonate with the deeply personal experiences of love, longing, and heartbreak. The collection captures the intensity of desire, skillfully intertwining themes of obsession and the complexities of relationships. Siken's lyrical approach creates an immersive atmosphere, drawing the audience into a reflective journey that confronts the reality of passion's potential for both beauty and pain.

Louise Glück's influence is evident in the texture of Siken’s work, as he employs vivid imagery and striking metaphors that evoke a sense of urgency. Each poem unfolds a narrative that is both haunting and electrifying, leaving readers to ponder the nuances of human connections. The collection stands as a poignant exploration of the fragility of love and the indelible marks it leaves, making it a significant contribution to contemporary poetry.

Another recommendation from a friend!I'm probably not the best suited to be reviewing poetry. The last time I probably even picked up something resembling poetry would've been back in high school. So going into this I was thinking if it would be able to strike some chords with me even if some of the subtle nuances in the writing style would likely go right over my head. While some poems didn't resonate with me as much as others, there were several parts that definitely evoked some emotions! Never have I taken so many pictures of pages to relay it back to someone. The more panicked and lost themes struck me in particular and there's a satisfaction in seeing the more complex sides of your thoughts being conveyed on a page."A man takes his sadness and throws it away but then he's still left with his hands""Oh, the things we invent when we are scared and want to be rescued""Here is my hand, my heart, my throat, my wrist. Here are the illuminated cities at the center of me, and here is the center of me, which is a lake, which is a well that we can drink from, but I can't go through with it"
