Description

Set in a post-apocalyptic future, this gripping narrative follows the awakening of a woman named Lilith Iyapo, who finds herself among the alien Oankali after a devastating war has erased humanity and the world as she knew it. As she grapples with the trauma of loss and her new reality, she learns about the Oankali's purpose: to save the remnants of the human race. However, this salvation comes at a cost, blurring the lines between hope and manipulation.

Lilith’s journey unfolds as she confronts her fears, the complexities of hybrid existence, and the moral dilemmas of survival. The Oankali's society offers her a chance to redefine humanity, but as she meets others like her who were chosen for this new beginning, she must navigate the delicate balance between acceptance and resistance. The themes of identity, power, and what it means to be truly human are poignantly explored, creating a thought-provoking landscape in this compelling story.

I'd give this a 3.5 out of 5 if I could - a 3 feels a bit harsh... The first 2/3rds of the book are great, a rich world with complex characters is built. It just seems to run out of steam towards the end and I found myself just wanting it to finish. The book explores the issues of violence, survival, gender, sexuality, racism, and power struggles. A really interesting one!
