🫀2.75 stars🪻There wasn't anything horribly wrong with this book, it was just boring and kind of a let-down compared to the main trilogy.🫰The plot twists at the end were so good. I felt like they might've been even better had I understood the plot more. Without the twists, this would've been rated lower.👍I kind of liked Wren. Her backstory was devastating and I like a strong FMC who isn't afraid to get what she wants.👌Wren and Oak felt like insta-love... I mean, I know they don't really get together at all, but it appeared to me that they loved each other pretty quickly. Would've liked more slow burn.👎I just CAN'T with the fact that Oak has hooves... I can handle Fae pointed ears, Cardan's tail and his horns, but the HOOVES? Clip clop clip clop how about no, thanks
That ending had me gagged. The way I audibly gasped. I usually can predict the plot twists. But this one had me fooled. 10/10. I absolutely adored the Cruel Prince, The Wicked King, and The Queen of Nothing. So, I had incredibly high hopes for this book, and I was not disappointed. The way it exceeded my expectations was remarkable. Love it love it love it
4.5 starsI adored the cruel prince series and was so excited for another installment in this world. Unlike some readers, as much as I adored Carden and Jude, they weren't the only great things in this world. Theres the magic, the lore, the politics, the creatures, the world, the kingdoms. I love it all. And we got all of it in this book too.I want to hate how the relationships between our main characters are, but then I remember how much I hated Carden at the start. Holly Black is great at making us love, hate, trust and not trust the characters. The no lying thing throws me all the time, trying to figure out what everyone's hiding.I loved this story, its was great, I can't wait to read the next book which is out Feb 2024 sadly. But my only downfall was the minor bland parts of the books. Sometimes it was a little boring but easy enough to read.
And with this book I completed my very shy reading challenge :) It took some time to get used to the fact that Oak is not a child anymore.I felt so sorry for most of the characters. For Oak and his never ending guilt and desire to keep his family safe even if it meant putting himself at risk over and over again. And for Ren who couldn't grasp the smallest idea that someone could love her and see her behind her looks. Her self esteem was so low, I was really struggling at times. Her history was so sad and gut-punching.
This book was everythingI love the cruel prince trilogy to bitsBut this story has a special place in my heart
Hot sich meha zouchn. Nit so sponnend außer dr schluss
When I first heard about this book, I was SO excited. I really enjoyed The Cruel Prince series, so I figured I’d enjoy this one just as much.I was wrong. There were several times where I really considered DNF’ing, especially while I had to return it to the library before I was halfway through and wait a few weeks to get it back.In the end, while I don’t regret reading it, I just didn’t enjoy it all that much. Oak and Wren were dancing around their attraction to each other most of the book, playing games like the Fae do. Half the time I was wondering if they were truly helping each other, or just using each other. I mean, they were going on the journey for their own means.Anyways. The ending felt a bit forced to me. Not sure if the lengths they went, or I guess mainly Wren, in the last couple chapters were completely necessary, especially that very end. We’ll see if I read the second part or just snoop bookstagram for spoilers.
This is not the plot driven, manipulative, explosion of trickery the first series was. This is an uncertain heart laid bare as our protagonist's physical journey takes the backdrop to that of her own self discovery, questioning her humanity, her fairie, her sense of self in such a larger, complicated world. Our little bird finding her wings. And the absolute poetry that is Holly Black's writing captivates with every line. I'm so in love with this book and so grateful she wrote it.
