Description
In the United States there is a growing interest in urban decay, very often a sociological interest, and also in what can be seen as the romanticism of abandoned structures in more rural areas. In Britain the situation is rather different. Land is at a premium in most parts of the country, so abandoned buildings tend to be demolished quickly. However, there are many exceptions to this, especially in postindustrial areas in the north of England. Depopulation also plays a part, as traditional industrial cities lose people to other areas, with prime examples of this being Liverpool and Glasgow. In both cities the population has halved over the last fifty years. Stewart Brown has been recording this dereliction photographically nationwide. Containing an introductory essay examining the causes and consequences of abandonment as well as the constant evolution of the built environment, it will also host a wealth of color images accompanied by informative captions that record this dereliction.
