Description

In the once-magnificent city of Elantris, a haunting transformation has unfolded. Once a beacon of beauty and power, Elantris now lies in darkness, its once-radiant inhabitants cursed into a state of decay and despair. The beauty of the city has been replaced by a haunting silence, and the echoes of its glory haunt its streets. The abrupt fall of Elantris and its people sets the stage for a profound exploration of immortality, power, and the nature of humanity.

As the story unfolds, the destinies of three individuals intertwine against this backdrop of decline. A young noblewoman grapples with her own complicated feelings for those who suffer, while a prince sees his dreams collapse as he is thrust into a political upheaval. Meanwhile, a mysterious figure experiments with the nature of the divine, risking the wrath of a restless god. Their interconnected paths reveal the beauty and terror of transformation amidst a world that has forgotten hope.

Sanderson crafts a rich tapestry of political intrigue, spirituality, and personal sacrifice, inviting readers into a profound examination of what it means to be alive, connected, and capable of change. The remnants of a once-glorious civilization urge the characters to confront their beliefs, forcing them to question their loyalties and aspirations in the face of fate’s relentless march.

As they navigate the depths of despair and hope for redemption, the true nature of Elantris emerges, and the possibilities of salvation and renewal beckon. This tale of resilience intertwined with existential ponderings invites readers to contemplate the power of community, love, and the enduring spirit in the face of despair.

Being the first published book by Brandon Sanderson, and one of his apparently weaker books by his own admission I went into this with somewhat low expectations but damn did this deliver and still manage to blow my expectations out of the water.- Strong characters with really good arcs- Plot was easy to follow with moral ambiguity - Hoid- Really kept you guessing as to what would happen nextSome big twists in here and just an overall really interesting world and setting. Sando has a huge imagination.

Took me a while to finish because it's both a chunky book and I've been busy in my personal life lately, but it was absolutely worth sticking with this book until the end.I knew going in that this was Sanderson's debut novel, my first Sanderson book and one that the community doesn't seem to favour all that much in comparison to his other books, so I was open minded as I read it, not expecting perfection on the first go.The first half of the book is a bit of a drag, a lot of political back and forth, world building and explaining just about everything. Which is usually common for long fantasy novels like this, but past the halfway mark, the book changes completely. Everything becomes much more intriguing, things start to come together and characters really start developing. I really loved all of the main characters, while enjoying some of the side characters (while others felt a little flat).Overall, a very good debut novel, one that I thoroughly enjoyed the latter half of. Especially the characters Hrathen and Galladon, they are my two favourites and I love them both equally....Even if Hrathen clearly has the absolute best character development overall. :)
