English Dictionary for Students

This entirely new dictionary was conceived and constructed from scratch to serve the needs and reflect the capacities of upper-intermediate-level students of English. It is comprehensive -24,000 words defined and 35,000 examples- but the words have been carefully selected to cover the core vocabulary plus the words students will encounter when they take the SAT-1 or any of the major ESL exams. The definitions are clearly written using a simple English vocabulary of just 1,500 words. This unique approach to word definition eliminates the great flaw of traditional dictionaries, that the definitions are often as incomprehensible to students as the words being looked up. Teachers of ESL courses will find this dictionary a terrific resource. Also included are phonetic pronunciations for each work, quotations form newspapers to show how each word is used in a semiformal context, and collocations within examples to show related words.
