Description

liked the writing style but would have liked deeper side characters

Shield of Sparrows was everything I love in romantasy and more—it’s without doubt one of my top reads this year. The story follows Odessa, daughter of the king, who’s married off as part of a treaty to a rival ruler. But this was never meant to be her role. Completely unprepared for life as a queen, she must leave her home behind, bound to a husband she barely knows, and carrying a secret mission from her father that could change everything.Along the way, Odessa is forced to rely on The Guardian—a mysterious, battle-hardened warrior who is equal parts infuriating and captivating. Their partnership is full of sharp banter, clashing wills, and a slow burn that is so deliciously drawn out it had me hooked on every page. The tension between them simmers beneath the surface, making their every exchange addictive. The world itself is stunning, full of political intrigue and monstrous threats. The beasts scattered across the journey are some of the most creative and terrifying I’ve ever read—I found myself pausing just to imagine them fully. They add such an exciting, dangerous edge to the story. While the pacing lingers in places, it never loses its heart. Odessa’s growth—from a sheltered princess used as a pawn to a young woman starting to claim her own strength—is compelling, and her relationship with The Guardian is layered with chemistry, respect, and just enough mystery to keep you wanting more. And that ending? Absolute chef’s kiss. Just when I thought I had the plot figured out, the twists came crashing in and left me desperate for book two.Shield of Sparrows is everything I crave in romantasy: rich worldbuilding, edge-of-your-seat stakes, and a romance that makes you ache for more. I can’t wait to continue Odessa and The Guardian’s journey.

Came for the Monsters, Stayed for the Slow BurnShield of Sparrows is a slow burn romantasy that completely pulled me in. I loved watching Odessa grow from an underestimated princess into someone who starts questioning the rules forced on her, and the world around her. The enemies-to-lovers tension is chef’s kiss, especially with a gruff, guarded Guardian who brings plenty of sparks. The story is atmospheric, highstakes, and full of looming danger without rushing the romance, which made the payoff feel earned. If you enjoy cursed realms, reluctant alliances, sharp banter, and a heroine discovering her own strength, this one is definitely worth picking up.Would happily continue this series!
