Description

In a whimsical world where etiquette lessons blend seamlessly with covert operations, a young girl named Sophronia Temminnick is poised to navigate the uncharted territories of high society and espionage. Set in a Victorian-inspired society buzzing with airships and supernatural creatures, Sophronia finds herself enrolled in a unique finishing school that caters not to the usual prim and proper decorum but to the arts of espionage. Here, she learns the finer points of charm and subterfuge, mastering not just the manners expected of a lady, but the cunning skills necessary to survive in a world filled with secrets.

As Sophronia engages with her eccentric classmates and quirky instructors, she becomes embroiled in mysterious plots and unexpected adventures. Each lesson—whether it’s refining her social graces or perfecting the art of disguise—prepares her for a destiny that intertwines the glamorous with the dangerous. With a cast of vibrant characters and a richly imagined setting, this narrative weaves together humor, intrigue, and youthful adventure in a story that dwells at the intersection of elegance and espionage.

Fourteen year old Sophronia Temminick is the bane of her Mother’s existence. None of her other children put Mrs. Temminick through trials like Sophronia, who would rather be tinkering than learning to be a lady. In Victorian England a young lady must know how to curtsy, yet no one wants company to see Sophronia’s dreadful curtsy. Mrs. Temminick is determined to make a proper lady out of Sophronia and enrolls her in Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality. Quickly, Sophronia realizes that this academy might be perfect for her rather odd pursuits. Oh she’s learning how to execute a proper curtsy and how to be a Lady, but she’s also learning the fine art of spying, intelligence gathering and how to disguise one’s true intentions. Sophronia makes some friends who help her in her new escapades and a few enemies too. I give Etiquette & Espionage 4 ½ ★s, this book is a quick, easy entertaining read, and Sophronia is quick thinking and courageous. This series is set in the same world as the Parasol Protectorate, Gail Carriger’s Adult Steampunk series which is also full of fun and cheek. I am looking forward to reading Curtsies & Conspiracies (Finishing School #2) which is slated for release November 5th, 2013.
