I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.Even Mermaids Drown is a novella set in the Even Ever After series universe, following the story of Whale-Shark shifter Sequana and Bear shifter Elis. The story begins with Sequana rescuing Elis from drawing in her whaleshark form. While trapped in his bear form, Elis is still able to understand Sequana—even after she shifts into her human form. As he spends more time around her, he grows attached and looks forward to speaking with her once he’s able to shift back. But when that moment finally comes, he’s too late—Sequana has already returned to the ocean, leaving him behind. Determined not to lose her, Elis begins his search to find her again.I’ve never read a book featuring a fish shifter before, and I found the concept really refreshing. The detail that Sequana looks like a mermaid when only half-shifted is a clever and creative touch.Despite being only 88 pages, the story moves at a perfect pace. It never feels rushed, and the relationship between the characters develops naturally and believably.Although this novella can be read as a standalone, I would recommend reading Even Vampires Bleed as well to get the most out of the world and its characters.Overall, I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. If you're looking for something short, imaginative, and emotionally satisfying, Even Mermaids Drown is a great pick!
