Farewell to Kindness

When he was a trader in Canada, Rede’s wife and children were killed in an attack sponsored by a rival fur trading company. He’s now back in England. He has inherited an Earldom from his cousin, and is using his political, financial, and social power to find and punish the investors who ordered the attack.

Elizabeth is a tenant at one of Rede’s country estates. She wants to ignore the attraction between them. If he gets close, he may realise who she and her sisters are, despite the names they have assumed since they went into hiding. She does not believe she can trust Rede to keep her secrets. His cousin George did, but then she was blackmailing George into silence, after the abuse of trust that resulted in her daughter.

Rede is ready to give his life in his quest for vengeance. But before he dies, he hopes to explore his feelings for the lovely widow. Despite his best efforts, Elizabeth holds him at arms’ length. Not only does the daughter with his cousin’s eyes stand in their way, but his own quest for revenge makes her unwilling to believe his good intentions.

As their attraction builds against a backdrop of village life, several accidents make them realise that someone wants Rede dead. Or perhaps, it is Elizabeth’s past catching up with her.
