Last year, I reread Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, and it firmly cemented itself as one of my all-time favourites. Naturally, I was curious to read more of her work. I wasn’t sure what to read next until I came across a physical copy of Frenchman’s Creek and decided to buy it.Before starting, I knew only two things:1.It was written by the author of Rebecca.2.It was about a woman who falls in love with a pirate. This book was… fine, I suppose, but it wasn’t what I had hoped for.Things I didn’t know before starting:1.She was married.2.She was a mother of two. These two facts completely changed how I viewed the love story. Instead of a romance, it felt like an affair.Toward the end, the story became more action-packed and surprisingly thrilling. I don’t think I could give it less than 3.5 stars at this point—though even that might be generous. I’m still undecided.I was oddly relieved when he was captured. When I reached the final sentence, I felt confused. Her decision to stay and not go with him seemed to come out of nowhere and went against everything she had been trying to do, as well as her repeated expressions of how much she hated her husband. I simply didn’t understand it.I can only hope that the rest of Daphne du Maurier’s books are better than this one.

I loved this book. The locations and the atmosphere are described in such a way as I really do feel like I am there on the south coast of Cornwall. Daphne Du Maurier has fast become one of my favourite authors.
