I found it difficult to connect with the characters and story.
Stranger Things meets Coraline. Spooky, atmospheric tale with ghouls, shadow worlds, and a mysterious family history. Maybe it’s because this is the only YA book of hers that I’ve read but it definitely lacked the depth of story as the others. I loved her writing style, as always. It was a beautifully told story and the imagery in the book was a stunning addition… it was just all a little too simple to get really invested in. For all the lead up and mystery as to what lies beyond the wall, you only get a very brief glimpse of the shadow world and its villain. The story is over as soon as it really seems to begin.
I did enjoy this book as a quick and easy read. The plot was mysterious but quite two dimensional. I did enjoy it though!
V.E. Schwab’s Gallant is a hauntingly beautiful tale that masterfully blends gothic horror with tender themes of belonging and identity. The story follows Olivia Prior, a mute orphan who discovers a mysterious family estate shrouded in shadow and secrets. Schwab’s writing is atmospheric and lyrical, pulling readers into a world that feels both ethereal and unsettling. The novel thrives on its rich symbolism, exploring themes of life, death, and the spaces in between. Olivia’s strength and resilience shine as she navigates a world that constantly seeks to silence her. The chilling yet captivating tone keeps readers enthralled, while Schwab’s signature world-building creates an immersive experience that lingers long after the final page.Gallant is a testament to Schwab’s storytelling brilliance — a perfect read for those who crave eerie ambiance, deeply emotional narratives, and unforgettable characters.
This was my first of Schwab's books and if I'm honest it hasn't made me want to pick up any of her others. It was okay but really not paced well. I felt like nothing happened in the first half and then everything happened in the last 50 pages. I enjoyed it but would I read this book again? Probably not.
OH MY LORD?!! HELLO?! Creepy, thriller and heart-wrenching at the same time?! Matthew!!!!!! ToT My fucking goddd!!! Why did you dieeeee?!!!! Made me fucking sob! Hannah and Edgar best couple! Olivia, girl be strong. ToT.
This was almost a 5 star read for me, I adore this book and the whole concept of the boom, but now I feel like I want a prequel and a sequel to this, i want to know everything that happened before and everything that happened after.
