3.5 ⭐I have very mixed feelings about this one, because there were things I genuinely loved and things that were very much not for me.What I liked:- Stella. Easily my favorite part of the book. She’s a badass, she’s spicy, she’s sassy, and I loved her sense of justice.- Her relationship with her sibling. I related a lot to the whole “you’re an adult, but in my brain you’re still my innocent little baby who can do no wrong and it is my mission to protect you” thing.- AJ. I liked him a lot.- The spice. Genuinely 5/5. No notes. I blushed. What I didn’t like:- The vengeance. I really dislike characters with that “I was wronged, therefore everyone must suffer” mentality. It just does not work for me. Like, babe, you're just a hurt baby. You have enough money to go to therapy. - The cruelty between the characters. Apparently one of my biggest dark romance dealbreakers is when they actively do horrible things to each other or to someone the other person loves. Blackmail, violence, wanting to actively destroy the people I love? Physically hurting my brother? I just can’t root for the romance after that.- The final reveal about his mom. What was that choice? It wasn't even a plot twist, because it was so heavily implied Richard was a decent person and had been looking for the woman he loved for a long time. I genuinely wished the book had just committed to Richard being an asshole instead of throwing in a last-minute reveal to explain everything. It didn’t make me feel better about any of it.I think that’s why Lights Out worked so much better for me. It was dark, but it was also funny and Josh was genuinely lovable. This one just felt meaner.So yeah. Probably a 2-star story for me, but Stella and the spice dragged it up to a 3.5 (yes, it was that good).
