Description
The Constitution of the Iroquois Confederacy, called the Great Law of Peace, might be the first example of a true constitution in history, although the precise dating of its creation is uncertain. There are far older codes of law, but those define the law for an existing state, not establishing a new one. When it comes to founding documents laying down the framework that constitute a society, the Great Peacemaker was certainly a pioneer.
Originally recorded using wampum beads, it was later translated into English after European contact.
