The Gradiva (The woman who walks) is the female protagonist of the 1903 novella by Wilhelm Jensen Gradiva: Ein pompejanisches Phantasiestück (Gradiva: A Pompeiian Fancy). She has become a modern mythological figure, having sprung out of the imagination of a fictional character and thus doubly unreal.
The fictional character in question is a young archaeologist, the male protagonist, who is fascinated by a female figure in an antique bas-relief and gives her the name ‘Gradiva’ after Mars Gradivus, the Roman god of war walking into battle; later, not quite certain whether he is awake or dreaming he meets her in the ruins of Pompeii.
Die Gradiva (Die Frau, die geht) ist die weibliche Hauptfigur dieser 1903 Novelle von Wilhelm Jensen. Sie ist eine moderne mythologische Figur geworden, aus der Phantasie eines fiktiven Charakter mit abgefederten und damit doppelt unwirklich.
Die fiktive Figur in Frage ist ein junger Archäologe. Der männliche Protagonist, der durch eine weibliche Figur in einem antiken Relief fasziniert ist, gibt ihr den Namen 'Gradiva' nach Mars Gradivus, dem römischen Gott des Krieges der zu Fuß in die Schlacht geht. Später, nicht ganz sicher ob er wach ist oder träumt, begegnet er sie in den Ruinen von Pompeji...
