Description

The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi—pure-bloods—have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals—well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures.

Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:

Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden.

Unfortunately, she’s crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn’t her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

I really enjoyed this book. I could kind of guess where it was going to go but I still enjoyed it. I hate the rules their world has and that's the whole point, I guess. I feel for Alex. In just a few short months, her world is completely torn apart. After her mother's death, she's forced back into a world her mother wanted to keep her from. When Alex meets with the oracle and hears her vague description of Alex's future, I had a pretty good idea where this was going. Even more so when Seth is introduced. It becomes pretty easy to match the oracles words with the two guys around Alex. I don't normally like love triangles but in cases like this, when it is clear who she will be choosing, I can tolerate them. But it still bothers me whenever the main character is close with the guy she ultimately won't choose. So far, that hasn't happened yet but I have a feeling it will, going by what he implies at the end. But there is only one way to find out and I know it is going to tear me up inside. Never liked seeing two characters who are obviously meant for each other being with other people. Never sat well with me. Hopefully I won't have to suffer through that for too long.
