So well done. Excellent mental health representation. Also, shows how to support someone struggling with mental health issues. Absolutely loved this.
Just so far it's been my best graphic novel series I've read. I'm obsessed with Nick and Charlie. And it's literally me realizing that literally all the other small stories are technically a part of the series and I need to hop on that. I cannot wait to pick up all The novellas and novels that are a part of this world and read it to.Merged review:Just so far it's been my best graphic novel series I've read. I thought that the last book couldn't have any more tough topics but I was wrong. Volume 5 brings another tough topic to the forefront - long distance relationships and following your dreams. In this volume, Nick, Tara, and Elle are working on Uni applications, Uni visits, and figuring out what they want to study and where they should go, considering that some places may require leaving some very important people behind. Can they deal with long-distance relationships? With such an open and honest conversation/relationship, their love should be able to conquer all.The second part that this book deals with is intimate relationships and the discussion of sex. Many students Nick and Charlie's age feel pressure to have sex for the first time and assume that everyone around them is doing it too. But this can be a huge deal in a relationship and taking the time to think through it and discuss with each other is what is best. For Nick and Charlie, both of them have insecurities, but discussing them with each other helps them understand one another better. We continue to see information about Charlie's mental health as well, which is depicted so real and raw. It is important for readers to see that therapy can actually be a good thing and can help so many people get through tough times. Their relationship is so pure, so supportive, and just so precious! I cannot wait for Volume 6!Quotes:"Well, we've talked about how it makes you feel anxious when you're in a situation where you don't have control. Or, at least, you feel like you don't have control. Because you've been in situations in the past where control has been taken away from you. And it's had very negative consequences. They are traumatic experiences for you. And they might still be affecting your headspace now. Part of intimacy is trusting someone enough to let go of that control a little and that can be very difficult sometimes. But it's important to remember that as long as you and Nick trust and respect each other, and are listening and communicating with each other, then you're safe, and there's nothing to worry about" pg. 96"Nick you always put everyone else's feelings above your own. And I know you and Charlie love each other, but this is your future. Like, I know how you feel. I'm in the same boat. But...I have to put myself first right now. Charlie would support you! He wants you to be happy! Putting yourself first for once wouldn't make him hate you." "I don't know who I am without him" "Maybe it's time to find out." pg. 240
So many things that I love about this third volume:1) We get to see all of our favorite characters in a completely different setting. The whole setting of a trip in Paris was SO AWESOME! Love that Oseman chose this route. And the addition being in black and white still allows the setting to come alive which I was quite impressed with.2) Not only do we dive deeper into Nick and Charlie's relationship but we get to see the dynamics of a few other relationships as well. We get a little insight into why the rugby coach is so protective of Nick and Charlie. We see more of Tara and Darcy's relationship as well as Tao and Elle's relationship. We even get a glimpse into a possible teacher relationship too. There are so many facets presented in this volume that probably every reader can relate to at least one character/relationship.3) There is a lot of discussion about the "right time" to come out to family and friends. The idea that a person should do so when they are ready versus what they feel society is telling them to do is such a strong and powerful statement. And it is made even more pronounced since it comes from multiple friends of Nick and Charlie.4) Readers also get a peek into just how much bullying can affect someone, specifically with depression, self harm, and eating disorders. 5) We see several characters finally stand up for themselves. It was so beautiful and so well written and timed. Such a phenomenal third volume!"Well you know, he's a very sporty, laddish short of boy.""Being gay has nothng to do with that! And for what it's worth, he's actually bisexual" pg. 565"We're sorry. We should have stopped it and told Harry to fuck off. Not even just at the cinema - we should have done it ages ago. And I know we should have been better when Harry was picking on Charlie. But we can promise we'll be better from now on. Seriously. And we really like Charlie. He's a nice guy and I don't want him to think we're like Harry. We're on your side Nick. We're your friends, if you still want us to be" pg. 579-580"Well I have this friend and it's becoming something romantic. But we don't want or need to tell anyone about it. For now, anyway. Because right now it's just our thing. This whole deal with you and Nick being out to people. I think you need to stop worrying about anyone else's feelings. It was different for you because you were outed and you didn't have any control, but this time you do. There's this idea that if you're not straight, you have to tell all your family and friends immeditely, like you owe it to them. But you don't. You don't have to do anything until you're ready" pg. 665"I wanted to say sorry. For all the shit I said at the cinema. It wasn't cool. I know I said some homophobic shit. Honestly my family's pretty homophobic. But I feel like I know better now and I won't say shit like that anymore" "What do you want from us? You said all that homophobic stuff to me, but it's okay, because you're sorry? I'm glad you've realized the error of your ways but it's not my job to give you a gold star. People like you made my life hell last year. And I shouldn't have to forgive anyone for any of it. You don't get to ambush me into forgiving you in front of everyone. One 'sorry' doesn't make up for all the things you said. So congrats on your incredibly difficult realization that gay people actually do have feelings and have a nice life." pg. 842
First, I saw the show on Netflix. I really liked it, that's why I read this. It is something else than a regular book. I enjoy it while reading.
Me encanto que se incluyeran temas importantes y un poco más fuertes en este libro pero sin perder la esencia.
