View AllMy only familiarity with the Chronicles of Prydain beforehand was the Disney movie The Black Cauldron. I have to say, it differs quite a bit from the book, and the book really made me love the characters so much more. Especially Eilonwy. This girl is a savage and I love her. I think Disney did her dirty by softening her so much. Gurgi is also more likeable and less goofy in this version, which I appreciate. The writing isn't very elegant, and even though danger is mentioned quite a bit throughout the whole book, I personally didn't feel like the characters were in much danger, until the very end. It felt more like a camping trip with new friends. I felt like the final encounter with the Horned King was a bit rushed and confusing. However, I think it accomplished what it set out to do, to present a fantasy adventure in a way that is suitable for children, and which I still found was quite pleasant to read as an adult. I am curious to read the following books and accompany the character development.
