Description

This volume presents a pioneering selection of up-to-the minute plays from the vibrant but little-known theatre of present-day Hungary. Everywoman by Peter Karpati is a modern retelling of the medieval Everyman story, with a female protagonist. The Seducer's Diary by Andras Nagy is loosely based on autobiographical writings by the Danish philosopher Kierkegaard. Offering a metaphor for modern Hungary, Muller's Dancers by Akos Nemeth shows a dance troupe falling apart when their leader deserts them. And in Andor Szilagyi's lightly surreal Unsent Letters two people repeatedly meet, fall in love and part. In these four plays, selected and introduced by the Literary Manager of one of Budapest's two National Theatres, can be seen again the sense of energy and adventure which has long been a characteristic of Hungary and Hungarians - particularly in the world of the arts.
