View AllThe hype is so high for this series - I expected it to be brilliant. I'm left disappointed after reading the first book.Pros:- Magic system is very unique and interesting- Short chapters - that make the saying "one more chapter" very easy to abuseCons:- Characters - frustrating is the overall impression. -- Kip - I liked the least - this is probably the most stupid, bi-polar character I've encountered in a fantasy series. He just cannot get over himself, and his infatuations, and his bodyweight; then to go in the next sentence to do something smart and completely out of character (as per what the author wants us to think of him). I got whiplash after whiplash. He's sometimes described very contradictory to what he actually does - as in smart, when he's the definition of stupid.-- Aliviana - what the hell was that at the end? I did not feel brainwashed by that "Lord", not in the slightest. Why? Don't tell me she'll be double-crossing him, I see that as highly improbable, considering her character so far.- Inconsistencies - there are a lot of them in this book. - Bad editing (ex. why was it important for the plot to have the description of Karis' period - was it leading somewhere? why have that much extra, unimportant, not interesting "stuff" in the book?)I wonder if the things I actually liked about this story lead somewhere in the other books, or if they were just there to be able to say - Yea, I did that - and be done with it.I was looking forward to immerse myself in a great series, especially given the premise, but I'm no longer sure I want to.
