Reviews

I recommend this book to everyone because it’s a truly wonderful experience. The Vanishing Half is one of those stories that completely surprises you, it’s nothing like what you expect, but in the best possible way. This book made me think, analyze, and reflect deeply. At some point, I cried for every single character. Their struggles, their choices, and their pain felt so real that I couldn’t help but be moved. It explores powerful themes: racial identity, gender identity, the impact of personal choices on family, racism, and the sacrifices we make in the pursuit of “freedom.”It’s the kind of book that stays with you long after you finish it. It challenges the way you see the world and makes you question so many things. If you’re looking for a thought-provoking, beautifully written, and emotional story, this is it. The Vanishing Half is simply brilliant.

As a twin myself, this book made my heart ache. Sisterhood is so complicated, but being a twin is a whole other playing field altogether. This book illustrated that field brilliantly, while also weaving in themes of colorism, motherhood, and the never ending question of self. I’ll remember this book vividly for a long time.

Growing up together in a close-knit black community, both decided to go on a different path that was set for them. Now, as time passes, their lives are intertwined when their daughter’s storylines intersect..𝐌𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬This book is slow-paced, very slow.. but equally captivating and thought-provoking. It switches the narration very often, jumping to different timelines to different character's POVs.. which sounds chaotic but in reality, it was wonderful! The way, the plot gave us insights into the same situation from different angles, really kept me hooked. I was so intrigued to read the historical, cultural and social themes portrayed in the book. I like the way the sensitive topics of race and racism, sex and gender, identity and belonging were portrayed. The writing flowed beautifully.. From Desiree to Stella to Jude to Kennedy, I felt connected to each of the characters.. even Early and Reese.. every character was written with clarity giving their personalities a unique role and incredible depth.. this depth is the best part of the book, for me!The way they chose their path, struggling with their inner demons as well the societal pressures, was so realistic and relatable yet so far away from one’s comprehension.. and I love how the individual stories were woven together.Plus, I like how the twins’ lives and their daughters’ lives are totally criss-crossed.. giving the plot another interesting aspect of how life works sometimes. And the ending just gives this satisfactory closure to the book and leaves you with so much to ponder upon. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧Overall, a poignantly beautiful book handling the issues of social status and personal dilemmas, exploring each aspect intricately. This book will leave you mesmerized with the exquisite writing and captivating plot, making you reflect on societal norms and one's privileges..Follow For More: Blog • Bookstagram • Goodreads
