1992 ഡിസംബര്‍ ആറിന് ഹിന്ദുതീവ്രവാദികള്‍ അയീദ്ധ്യയിലെ ബാബ്റി മസ്ജിദ് തകര്‍ത്തു. ബംഗ്ലാദേശിലെ മുസ്ലീം തീവ്രവാദികളും അടങ്ങിയിരുന്നില്ല. അവര്‍ ബംഗ്ലാദേശിലെ ഹിന്ദുക്കളെ ആക്രമിക്കാനും ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങള്‍ തീവച്ചു നശിപ്പിക്കാനും തുടങ്ങി. ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഹിന്ദു തീവ്രവാദികള്‍ ബാബ് റി മസ്ജിത് തകര്‍ത്തതിന് ബംഗ്ലാദേശിലെ ഹിന്ദുക്കള്‍ എന്തു പിഴച്ചു? ഈ സംഭവത്തെ അധികരിച്ച് ഒരാഴ്ചകോണ്ട് എഴുതിത്തീര്‍ത്ത നോവലാണ് ലജ്ജ. ബംഗ്ലാദേശിലെ ലഹളയില്‍ ഏറെ വിഷമിക്കേണ്ടി വന്ന ഒരു കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ പതിമൂന്ന് ദിവസങ്ങളാണ് ലജ്ജയിലെ പ്രമേയം.

ഭാഷയും സംസ്കാരവുമാണ് മനുഷ്യരെ ഏകോപിപ്പിക്കുന്ന പ്രഥമഘടകമെന്നും മറ്റെല്ലാ വിഭജനങ്ങളും കൃത്രിമമാണെന്നും തസ്ലീമ പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കുന്നു.

The Duttas - Sudhamoy, Kironmoyee, and their two children, Suranjan and Maya - have lived in Bangladesh all their lives.
