Description

In this captivating retelling of a beloved classic, the story reimagines the life of Mary Bennet, the often-overlooked sister from Jane Austen's famed "Pride and Prejudice." Set against the backdrop of genteel society and its rigid expectations, Mary emerges as a complex character who grapples with her own identity and desires. As her sisters pursue love and social standing, Mary is determined to carve out her own path, challenging the conventions that seek to define her.

Through sharp wit and keen observation, she navigates the intricacies of family dynamics, societal pressures, and the quest for autonomy. The novel explores themes of feminism and self-discovery, revealing a voice that resonates with readers across generations. Katherine J. Chen beautifully captures Mary's struggle and resilience, painting a rich portrait of a woman who defies expectations and strives to assert her individuality in a world that often disregards her.

I wanted to like this book but it felt like a constant attack on all the Bennett sisters. I don't feel Mary was the same character I read about in Pride and Prejudice nor was her family. This book felt more like a re-writing, like a twisted alternate universe where everyone shat on the poor girl but she inadvertently came out above them somehow and was well deserving in her gain despite their suffering.
