View AllThe pacing of this book was good. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot, seeing it become a story of its own after establishing the first few chapters by borrowing elements of Cinderella, as it was marketed. The world is intriguing. I am not exactly captivated by it but I appreciate how everything neatly folded into each other. Nothing seemed unreasonable or wildly imaginative. The magic is not quite explained (i.e. Soft magic system) but it’s also still very grounded. I like it! There were also parts of the book I actually had my heart rate spiked because I was so invested in the outcome. However… my interest in this book was lost at the 90% mark. I was not happy with the way events unfolded. It did not prepare me enough for it. I don’t know how to describe it but I literally paused the book to read another book at the reveal. Additionally, I feel this book should have been edited more. There’s a lot of telling. Some nice descriptive phrases (oh the descriptions are really good) but still very much “telling” of the emotional side of things rather than showing. A lot of themes are repeated but they seem surface-level in the sense when they are mentioned again, it doesn’t really value-add or deepen itself into the narrative. After reading the ending, I feel the introduction could have better implied it. It feels a little abrupt. I’m also not really a fan of the romance between the FMC and the ML… I don’t know why… they’re not a lot of chemistry past the tropes… Regardless of the reasons that hindered me from appreciating this book, this is a good book to read. 3 stars is to say I didn’t hate this book (but it also didn’t really affect me in the grand scheme of things). I am looking forward to seeing more books from this author!
I 've been meaning to read a book from this author for a while so I'm super happy that I got the opportunity to discover Never Ever After early 🥰After the death of her uncle, Yining is forced to survive with theft and lies, but when she invites herself to the Royal Ball, her world is turned upside down. To her surprise, the prince sets his eyes on her and despite a tempting offer, she quickly discovers that things are not always as dreamy as it seems. With very little options, Yining throws herself in a dangerous adventure she could have never anticipated. I liked the writing style, world building and was pleasantly surprised by the political aspect of the book, but I have to admit it took me time to get involved in the plot and connect with Yining (she did grow on me after some time). The romance part was nice, but not knowing the characters true intentions slightly stressed me out. 😅I didn't realize it was a Cinderella retelling before finishing the book, but it's true that the evil step-mother, magical ring and the Royal Ball gave this book some classic fairytale vibes. I’m giving it 4 stars which is maybe a little generous, but 3 would be too low since I still enjoyed this book and would love to read the next 🙂
