Description

In a world where the monotony of suburban life can feel suffocating, one woman's struggle with her identity takes a wild turn. As she grapples with the demands of motherhood, she finds herself increasingly disconnected from her former self. The pressures of raising young children and maintaining her household inevitably lead her down an unexpected path, where she begins to embrace her primal instincts.

As the lines blur between reality and fantasy, she navigates through a metamorphosis that challenges both her family dynamic and her sense of self. With dark humor and sharp observations, the narrative explores themes of motherhood, identity, and the complexity of feminine experience. Rachel Yoder crafts a poignant and often surreal tale that captures the essence of transformation, leaving readers questioning what it truly means to be both wild and domesticated in a modern world.

I have to admit that this has left me a little bit confused. The book's quite original, but quite nightmarish as well. Not in the sense that it has jump scares or scenes that could raise the hair on the back of your neck, but mainly on account of its oddness. It's alien and alienating at the same time. I couldn't understand the central character, to say nothing of her final accomplishment and completed art. Overall, the story has a lot to do with feminism and women empowerment, but all in a bizarre fashion that raises quite a few question marks in regard to violence, child and animal abuse, among other things. It is natural for animal to behave like animals, for example, but it's a quite different story for people to behave like animals. And I get it, on a metaphorical level, this might serve the purpose of discussing social norms, sexism, and gender roles, but it still doesn't justify the questionable behavioral pattern of "Nightbitch"3 x ⭐ because I really wanted to get to the end and understand what was going on, but found nothing substantial there after all.

I didn't really know what to expect going into this, but I found it really engaging, evocative, dynamic, and, above all, weird. I was surprised at how feral this book was. Like I know, I read the premise. But I thought the forward propulsion and increase of violence as we barreled toward the conclusion was beautifully done.content warning for graphic animal death btw

It was a slow book, but really started to build into something interesting. The style was weird, but again fit the story. I think I enjoyed it, but I'm not sure that I would read it again.
