Description

A USA TODAY BESTSELLER! A Bram Stoker Award Nominee and World Fantasy Award Finalist! An August Derleth Award Nominee! An Indie Next and October LibraryReads Pick! 2022 RUSA Reading List: Horror Winner! A Most Anticipated Read on Goodreads, Tor.com, Crime Reads, BookRiot, The Nerd Daily, and more. Cassandra Khaw's Nothing But Blackened Teeth is a gorgeously creepy haunted house tale, steeped in Japanese folklore and full of devastating twists. A Heian-era mansion stands abandoned, its foundations resting on the bones of a bride and its walls packed with the remains of the girls sacrificed to keep her company. It’s the perfect venue for a group of thrill-seeking friends, brought back together to celebrate a wedding. A night of food, drinks, and games quickly spirals into a nightmare as secrets get dragged out and relationships are tested. But the house has secrets too. Lurking in the shadows is the ghost bride with a black smile and a hungry heart. And she gets lonely down there in the dirt. Effortlessly turning the classic haunted house story on its head, Nothing but Blackened Teeth is a sharp and devastating exploration of grief, the parasitic nature of relationships, and the consequences of our actions.

2.5⭐This story has very good bones and a lot of potential. For me, it was a bit too rushed and a bit too absurd. I wouldn't be able to tell you what happened there.

I really like the plot of the book and I love the characters and the development between the characters and their history and everything. But my biggest struggle with reading this book though enjoyable and many aspects were the vocabulary. I am someone who struggles with really bad dyslexia and so for me trying to read this book was constant having to go back and forth between certain paragraphs or me having a whole like mental breakdown because I didn't understand a certain paragraph because of how many bigger words or bigger vocabulary words there were that I'm not used to seeing. Aside from those the book was a three out of five for me given the vocabulary but the plot was amazing I love the story I love the aspect of bringing in Japanese culture into the whole situation. And I think the writer did an amazing job writing out her story. In the way that she describes things it was absolutely mesmerizing to read when I did understand it.
