Reviews

I absolutely loved Bride and wasn’t ready to let go of the characters or their snarky banter, so I jumped straight into Mate. Both books were such a refreshing palette cleanser. Compared to the heavy dark romances I’ve been reading lately, this story was light, fun, and engaging—even with the fighting, kidnapping, and crazy cults mixed in!I really appreciated the author's world-building choices. Instead of describing characters top-to-toe, she leaves room for your imagination to fill in the blanks. The overarching plot of Serena discovering her past while she and Kown navigate their relationship kept me completely hooked, as did the snippets of character thoughts at the start of each chapter—they added great context to the whole "refusing the mate bond" storyline. The closest comparison I can draw is the Twilight saga (and don't shoot me, I loved those books when they came out, sparkles and all!). But as a former Team Jacob fan, Mate was definitely my favorite of the two. It was packed with plot twists that kept me glued to the pages, though I won't spoil any of them here.If I had one complaint, it was the spice. I understood the "knot" concept from Bride, but the explicit scenes here felt a bit too focused on the wolf side of things at the expense of genuine romance. Still, I smiled, laughed, and thoroughly enjoyed myself. As a wise author friend (thanks, Aimie!) once told me: "Sometimes you just have to read what your bookworm heart wants, before the ones you should be reading." If the author writes more in this world, I’ll definitely be picking it up!

I liked bride way more then mate. It's still a fun book to read but I feel like something was missing. The relationship didn't feel as real or guininue ad the relationship in bride.

Nope. I’m DNFing this at 70%.I’ve given it enough chance😅The plot is dragging with so many unnecessary conversations. 60% of the book we had the chronic disease angle, only to be turned out... this? There were two doctors, two, who couldn't diagnose her correctly?I'm just... not vibing with plot or the characters.

I am so sorry Queen Ali! But this book genuinely ain't it. This would've been a DNF around 50%, if I hadn't committed to buddy read it with a friend. But I fear it might have put me in a terrible reading slump.I will admit that the entire premise of this book should have clued me on that I wouldn't enjoy it. But if anyone could make me like this genre, it would've been Ali Hazelwood, so I felt compelled to give it a try.I find it very hard to formulate my thoughts into coherent sentences, so I will make lists instead. What worked for me:- Ana was adorable;- The writing, as usual, was chef's kiss. This was an easy read and I loved the banter between Koen and Serena. I actually giggled quite a few times. What didn't work? Everything else. I'll try to keep it brief. - The miscommunication (between everyone and everyone else) was killing me. There was miscommunication for soooo muuuuuch of this book, I was exhausted.- This book desperately needed dual POV. I don't know why the author chose not to do it. Koen was such an asshole for so much of this story that I genuinely dislike him 🤷🏻‍♀️. This was supposed to be a slow burn, but I feel like that only works if we are in the characters' head. We don't get to experience his thoughts, so... The slow burn wasn't slow burning enough.- This is absolutely a matter of taste, but this was my first and last book with this kind of premise. The whole mates idea was nice in theory, but here it felt like a cheap way to create the romance. Like... We don't understand whyyyy they love each other, we're just supposed to accept that they do, because they're mates. Cool, but definitely not for me. They lie so much to each other and we just have to accept that this is so swoony because... Biology?- Also, this is, again, absolutely my fault, but the spicy scenes made me very uncomfortable, in the given context. The whole Serena being in heat was minus 100 on a scale of 1 to 10 sexy. And that being a PLOT TWIST? AFTER SHE THOUGHT SHE WAS DYING FOR HALF THE BOOK? EXCUSE ME!!?- Last, but not least, (and this is a very veeeery weird and personal ick that I got). The cult plotline. It works, it's actually a very good idea for the action of the book. But it hits very close to home to how people are genuinely acting in the political context of the world right now, with extremism gaining more and more followers, even in my country. It replicated so closely what I've experienced with people around me in the past year, that it was a downer to read about. This is just me being weird, it's not that deep, it's just a romance story, but I couldn't separate fact from fiction there and I hated reading about it. That's it. Feel free to toss tomatoes and eggs at me.
