Description
The novel is set in the early eighteenth century. Cromwell has been dead for three generations, but the war between English and Irish still goes on. Two towering figures confront one another: O'Houlihan, the brave and brilliant leader of the rebels, and the detested commander of the English troops. They are pledged to fight to the death, and their mutual hatred is implacable; but no less intense is their devotion to the honourable conventions of chivalrous warfare.
