This is truly one of my favorite reads. Rereading this book is still just as emotional and satisfying as the first read. I love going on Elspeth’s journey of self discovery and romance as she learns the dark side of her gift.

Great world building! Great magic system!

🪟4.25 stars🎴At first, it was like a low four, but after that ending? That ending bumped it up to a high four for me.🫰The magic system in this book is insanely good and creative and was so refreshing to read about... if the worldbuilding was not this good, I fear it would've been a weak 3 star.👍Writing, prose and pacing are all good!👎Would've liked more angst and emotional turmoil -- the ending was nice, but I wanted more throughout the book.👎The romance is a little rushed at first -- felt a bit underdeveloped -- but it does develop quite nicely. I wouldn't recommend the romance alone because their chemistry was a bit weak and it was insta-love on the male lead's side, but the book overall is very good.

This is definitely a slower, somber atmospheric read- not the fast, action packed plot of a lot of other fantasy books… which is great in its own right, if you go in expecting that. It has gothic fairytale vibes, which I really enjoyed. Ravyn and Elspeth definitely had some sweet moments but I’m not sold on their romance yet. It just had some weird pacing. It seemed to go from barely anything flirtation to in love desperation out of nowhere. The Nightmare was probably my favorite character with his sarcastic humor and riddles. I really loved the unique magic system with the cards and the lore of the world. It did feel like the entire book was more the world-building and set up for all the main plot… except then it ends as soon as it really begins. Since this is part of a duology, I’m optimistic that the second book will give “more” and that as a whole the entire story will be rated higher.

I had such high expectation for this book. Unfortunately they didnt meet them. To me this book was really boring. I felt like nothing happened there where three or four intresting moments and that was it. I have a hard time deciding if I want to continue the series. On one hand I want to know how the story ends on the other hand I'm scared the second book won't be much better then the first book.

I was drawn to this book by the cover and went into it blind, the only information being that it was a gothic fantasy, a genre I am loving lately. It was excited when it was chosen as our buddy read as it had it on my tbr for a little while, and it did not disappoint. I loved the mystery and intrigue of the cards, the mist and the magic. Having sections of the rhymes from the book of Alders at the start of each chapter, was a great way of showing what was to come. I will even go as far as saying that the nightmare even grew on me!I'm pleased I waited this long to read this duology, as I can dive into book 2 without a wait as we end this one on a cliffhanger.perfect for those looking for an atmospheric slow-burn gothic fantasy.

This took me a day to read more time to figure out my rating.I loved the premise of the magic system and the lore behind it, however I wish we got to see more of that in action and less of the romance.I don't know if it is because I'm not a big romantasy reader or what, but I probably would of loved this more if the romance was more on the back burner and spread out over 2 books. However the magic, the atmosphere and the plot (without the romance) carried this book for me. I also love the monster.Starting book 2 straight away
