Catalog compiled by Clifford Ross. Foreword by Dale R. Roylance. Illustrated with nineteen plates containing twenty-two Gorey drawings [two in color]. This catalogue provides an opportunity to see the full chronological and stylistic range of Gorey's work. It permits us to look at his creative process: the manuscript notes, preliminary, unfinished, and rejected drawings, allow us insight into his method. The reader of Gorey's picture books quickly finds himself in dark, alien terrain where strange and unsettling encounters are to be expected, and where assorted disasters produce an overall feeling of amused apprehension and cheerful horror.
