The golden instruments cast spellsUpon the beery curried breath, Curdled it in spiralling bronzeIntestines, warmed it, and unfurledAll the aching sadness of days gone byAll the vanished sunsets and allThe longing of all the world. The woodwind took it upRefined it to a keening songThat floated on the December airCaught in a tangled breezeThat blew to nevermoreThe dead and dying leavesOf long forgotten trees.
