Remembering the Maine continues the story of young Nivek James, introduced in the previous book Homesteading the Land. Leaving his family homestead in Minnesota, he becomes a newspaper correspondent during the Spanish-American War, 1898. With his boyhood friends, Wing, an Ojibwa Indian, and Jesse, from Medora, North Dakota, the young men travel across country by horseback, train, and stagecoach on their journey to join the Rough Riders and Theodore Roosevelt. This book is the story of their journey, the training of the troops, and the war in Cuba. It is a coming-of-age tale of bravery, courage, hardships and patriotism set against the background of emergence of the U.S.A. as a world power.
