Robert William Service [1874-1958] was born in Scotland. He moved to Canada at the age of 21. He worked at the Canadian Bank of Commerce in Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory. There, he wrote about the North and gold miners in the ballads "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" and "The Cremation of Sam McGee." His first book, The Songs of a Sourdough, made him a success, He was dubbed the "Canadian Kipling". He was a war reporter for the Toronto Star in the Balkans (1912 -13), and later a war reporter for the Canadian government in World War I.
