I spent the first half of this book debating DNF’ing it simply because it all felt too familiar/unoriginal. It was very similar to a SVU episode I’ve seen and I actually googled whether it was supposed to be based on the JonBenet Ramsey case. Then, about half-way through, everything that seemed so obvious (and is even “revealed” as the answer) isn’t what actually happened! After that point, it was much more interesting and had my attention trying to figure out the truth. Unfortunately, it still remained mostly predictable. A couple surprises but nothing really shocking. Even so, it was a sad, compelling story and I would have rounded it up to 3 stars… but the ending! The ending isn’t an ending at all! It really feels like another chapter is just missing from the book.
This book started off really strong for me. I love the crime junkie podcast and was really excited to see what kind of book Ashley was going to bring to life. I think if not for the ending I would have given this book 5 stars. The ending was too sudden and abrupt for my taste and left me feeling unsatisfied. I know a lot of stories end this way in the real world with people dying or going missing and no one catching who did it..but I was really hoping for a different outcome with this novel. I’m not a fan of unfinished endings and this is what I felt like when I closed the book. If you don’t mind endings that leave you with questions or guessing what happened then this is the book for you!
