This is a new author and series for me, Allyson James writes PRN/Urban fantasy which currently are my go to favorites. What I liked about this book the world is interesting, her magical beings are different and fresh. Love the main two characters (Janet & Mick) for their quirks and they background stories. Liked the style and flow of the book. But the Sheriff Nash Jones, plotline/character is SUPER problematic, don't tell me a cop is by the book and then continually prove that to be false. Please tell me that he is a Sheriff that runs his district by his rules regardless of the law and I'd have been good, instead the constant Nash is a man who lives by the rules (b.s.). The character doesn't follow the basic principles of policing, no rights, prejudices flying, little investigation before he is throwing handcuff on Janet, an indigenous woman. Same as saying a racist cop is a good cop, nope never. As a writer if you're going to feature a character with specific career, please do some research and try to keep the job principles in mind because writing a character with so many plot holes is disrespectful to your readers.I tried to give this 3.5 stars but really hits between 2.5 and 3 stars, so will settle on 3 stars 🌟
