Description

In her New York Times Bestselling book The Last Romantics, Tara Conklin writes about her character Fiona Skinner. Fiona is a renowned poet. She was asked about what inspired her to write her most iconic work, The Love Poem. She begins to tell her audience the story about her family and the betrayal that echoes through time. Her family’s story begins with a funeral in a big yellow house in a middle-class town in Connecticut. Fiona and her older siblings Renee, Caroline and Joe emerged from there deeply connected and staunchly loyal to one another. Two decades after, the siblings found themselves challenged by a family crisis that strengthens their bonds and forces them to question their life choices and what they can do in the name of love. Tara Conklin’s The Last Romantics is a moving and intimate epic novel about an American family. This novel is an unforgettable exploration of the family ties that bind us, the responsibilities that we embrace and the duties we resent.

There’s not a ton I can say without revealing too much but for a book that literally tells you to assume nothing about what you think you’re reading, none of the twists were super surprising. I did like the twist in the epilogue though. That was one part I didn’t expect. I definitely enjoyed the first part of the book more than the rest. After the initial “big” twist, the plot kinda went all over the place in ways that didn’t make sense to me. There were too many subplots that just made for more questions that didn’t really add any significance to the story in the end. It isn’t a particularly long book but I feel like 100 pages could be cut out without making too much a difference to the overall story. It tried to get overly complicated in a way that didn’t work for this story. One thing I did really like was the subtleness of what was happening in the marriage… the things that had you wondering which of them was actually acting crazy. It felt like a realistic view of how abuse can look and helps you appreciate how women can choose to stay and/or doubt their intuitions. I liked the way it was all slowly unveiled and the shift we saw in Vanessa as she gained more confidence in herself and what she was experiencing. Rounding up to 3 stars because it was still entertaining enough but, overall, just ok.
