View AllHaving avoided "chick lit" all my life (because, you know, I wasn't LiKe OtHeR GiRls) I actually didn't know what I was getting into when I started reading this book, as unlikely as that may seem. Nonetheless I happened to read it at just the right time in my life, in the midst of a depression induced quarter life crisis. I can relate to Liz in more ways than I'd like to admit, so this book hit hard for me. I was nodding along, smiling, laughing, crying. And I grew a little bit with her, reflecting on my own life, letting go of my worries for a while and finding joy and hope instead. I think if we were still living in the same society it was published in (early 2000's USA) I might have rated it five stars. But sometimes her wording/her worldview is just not pc and Liz is - in some psychological regards - not very self reflected. Her journey is inspiring nonetheless and she's come a long way (no pun intended). I personally do not share her religious/spiritual beliefs, but there is wisdom in these pages nonetheless, and even some things that I want to implement in my own practices.I enjoyed her writing, but because the story resonated so deeply with me I read it like it was written by a friend, and I can think of several passages where her style might have annoyed me otherwise. I'd recommend this book to anyone who's going through a quarter life-, mid life- or any other kind of self-discovery crisis and/or just went through a break up with the person they thought they'd spend the rest of their life with.
I really enjoyed this book, I loved the humor in it, the little lessons throughout the story, and the overall message!
I don't know what I was quite expecting this book to be, but it was only mediocre over all. I loved the parts that made me laugh and made me think. However, some parts just weren't told right. I know she is a recognized author... but that's how I feel. Overall, I love the message of the book: find yourself and be true to yourself. Don't live unhappy. I did, however, like the way that she wrote the memoir-as if she was talking to you in person.
