Description

In the aftermath of the Dunkirk evacuation during the Second World War, soldier Jack Foster returns to his family home in the mining town of Bennington for a well-deserved spell of leave. Rescued from the beaches of Dunkirk, he makes the most of the relative normality of wartime Britain for a precious ten days with his parents, brothers and sister. Simple pleasures take on an importance for him that he would not have believed possible a short while before, while those around him have a release from the overpowering worry and concern about his well-being. This book recounts the everyday lives of the Foster family, doing things that would normally be taken for granted but that are now almost a ritual. Life goes on, even under the threat of war, and fun can still be had if one knows what to do.
