The Castle

Carol Retherford wondered how it would feel to be a rich girl and live in the huge house across the street which everyone called The Castle. She envied Veronica Kingsbury, who dressed in expensive clothes and always had plenty of money because her father owned the only factory in Winchester. But when Carol learned to know Nicky (as she called her), she saw another side of the Kingsburys. Nicky's father was too wrapped up in his work. He didn't want his family to associate with the local people. He was afraid Nicky would find a boyfriend beneath their social level. A severe snowstorm, a fire in the garage, a distant airplane crash, and Carol's friendship with Nicky all helped bring the Kingsbury family and their neighbors closer together.
