Built in 1893, at the interchange between three of the city's more disreputable neighborhoods (Chinatown, the Barbary Coast, and North Beach), the Hotel's low rates, murky bar, and discreet management have made it a Mecca for lowlifes, grifters, and cons, as well as down-and-out artists, writers, and musicians.
