The Declaration of Interdependence -- both an enlightening creed and a passionate call to action -- was composed by David Suzuki and a team of activists and environmentalists in 1992, in recognition of the United Nations' Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
This convincing statement of environmental principles progresses through three stages. First, ?This We KnowOCO places humans firmly within the community of living things that depend on biodiversity for survival We humans are but one of thirty million species weaving the thin layer of life enveloping the world.OCO The second section, ?This We Believe, OCO acknowledges that we have put the survival of the planet at risk, and then optimistically asserts that we must ?now build a new politics of hope.OCO And in the final and moving section, ?This We Resolve, OCO we are called on to embrace responsibility and to work ?for an evolution: from dominance to partnership; from fragmentation to connection; from insecurity, to interdependence.OCO
