Insurance fraud investigator Annie Raymond is in trouble: her new business is about to fail. She travels to rural Scotland to break the news to her family, but before she can come clean, a human leg is pulled from the loch waters, causing murky memories of her mother's unsolved murder to return. Her estranged father, a police detective, is part of the investigation, which leads straight to the town's creepiest inhabitants, the doll makers.

But the more Annie digs into the doll makers' dark secrets, the more she is haunted by memories of her own painful past. Still, she is determined to learn the truth about her mother's life—and her death—even though every step she takes toward the killer leads her closer to a trap laid by a dangerous mind, plotting to make murderous history repeat itself.
