Description

In the year 2059, the world has divided into two factions, each navigating the complex terrain of human consciousness and technological evolution. Robert J. Sawyer crafts a compelling narrative that delves into the profound implications of what it means to be human in an age where minds can be digitized and downloaded. The story follows members of each group as they explore their shared existence, yet diverging beliefs about the nature of identity, soul, and the essence of life itself.

As tensions rise, characters are faced with moral dilemmas that question the boundaries of humanity. Their journeys lead them to confront not only the potential and peril of their advancements but also the core of their relationships, both with one another and themselves. The narrative weaves a rich tapestry of interconnecting lives and the ethical ramifications of a future where technology transforms the very fabric of existence.

Sawyer’s vision is both thought-provoking and engaging, inviting readers to ponder the future of humanity. As societal divisions deepen and the stakes escalate, the characters must navigate a labyrinth of choices that could redefine civilization as they know it. Each revelation brings them closer to understanding the true cost of their pursuit and the meaning of being alive in a rapidly changing world.

The Downloaded is a wonderful little gem of a Sci-Fi story. Brendan Fraser is fantastic in this audiobook version on Audible. Other voice actors are hit and miss due to some very fake sounding British accents.

When sticking to its premise, this is where it is at its most successful. However it does venture into the territory of 'preaching' about real world issues: such as the Covid-19 pandemic. In these moments it is far less successful.

Overall it is a short, enjoyable gem that I would recommend any Sci-Fi fan check out, if you haven't already.
