The Hanged Man

Criminologist Andrew Steele is found shot to death in his palatial Florida home. His wife, Rae, a former counselor at the state prison, is missing and is the chief suspect. At the same time, new age bookstore owner Mira Morales has a vision regarding the murder; when she reports this to the police, she is dismissed out of hand. Homicide detective Wayne Sheppard finds several tarot cards, each marked with the date they were received, in Steele's study. He visits Morales's store to find out what the cards mean. The FBI becomes involved in the case, under the pretense that Steele's wife was abducted; in actuality, they think Steele's murder is related to a covert CIA-funded psychic project conducted years earlier using prisoners as subjects. This complicated tale of government conspiracy and revenge is notable for its extremely well crafted characters.
