For me, it'd be a 3 stars, with regard to certain subjects within this book that were not entirely necessary, despite understanding that there was a need to show corruption. While I am not well-versed in this genre in particular, I must hand it to Craig Thomas for writing an intriguing, well-fleshed out story with characters who are equally just so, both good and bad. His villains, many of whom were down right despicable in their own right, help to convey the grittiness of this world. Unlike many writers today who seem needlessly obsessed with making relatable villains, Thomas simply shows the reader the reality of the situation, the reality of the thoughts in the character's head. Slipping artfully from one to the next, he weaves a compelling story that shows how a situation planned or not can change very quickly from bad to worse. However, one should be warned that one of the villains, despite its not being detailed extensively, has pedophilic tastes, which require reader discretion.
