Description

This is a short highly moral play set in Iceland at the end of the Viking period, about 1100. The principal character is Thorfinn, a traditional pagan Viking. He returns from merciless raids abroad to Iceland where he has left his estranged wife, Valgerd, and their daugher Gunlöd. At this time, Christianity is beginning to take hold in the Norse world, and Gunlöd has already converted to the new religion.

Thorfinn is pursued to Iceland by the Allthing as an outlaw and a criminal. He stands for the indominatable character of a harsh age which is passing away. in the end, he dies, reconciled with his family, from wounds received in battle with his enemies, perceiving at the point of feath, his final vulnerability and the existence of universal power beyond his own assumed invincible might. The story heralds the emergence of Scandinavian society into a Christian community accepted by the rest of Europe.

This collection of literature attempts to compile many of the classic works that have stood the test of time and offer them at a reduced, affordable price, in an attractive volume so that everyone can enjoy them.
