The electrical failure is very widespread. And without electricity nothing works. There is no communication so no one knows what is happening. Gas pumps need electricity to run so there is no transportation. Water needs to be pumped so there is no fresh water or sewer facilities. All food that needs refrigeration has gone bad and there will be no more deliveries of what is left. People are afraid and panicking. Money is useless but you can be killed for a bottle of water. Gangs roam the streets of even the best of neighborhoods. The authorities are overwhelmed. It's now a fight to survive world. And John knows nothing about fighting.Jesse is a descendant of a prophet. His family has told for generations the story of the collapse of society. They are taught to be prepared, for not just their lives but their very souls will depend upon it. They have been preparing for a long time. Although Jesse is not really a believer in the prophecy he loves the lifestyle the preparation has given him. He is in the middle of the chaos and violence on that fateful day. Jesse is also not a fighter but he knows how to survive without electricity. Fate throws Jesse and John and family together and together they begin their dangerous journey to the Sanctuary of Jesse's home.
