Description

Against the background of the Japanese Invasion of Burma in 1942,Paul Cooper, a 20 year old captain in a Gurkha Regiment and 19 year old Sue Whitcomb meet and fall in love. But with the country in the grip of panic Sue and her family are forced to flee for their lives and the lovers are separated.
Not knowing whether or not Sue has managed to escape, Paul leads his company for some 1,000 miles in the longest retreat in the history of the British Army, across Burma into India. He grows in confidence, inspired by the courage of his Gurkhas as they make the Japanese pay for every inch of ground gained whilst avoiding the Scorpion Trap-an ancient Japanese military manoeuvre imitating the scorpion which seizes its prey from behind and stings it to death.
Meanwhile, Sue and her mother join an army convoy travelling the long and hazardous journey through Death Valley into India to reach the British Lines in Imphal where she hopes to be reunited with Paul.
